Missing product images on Shopify: causes and fixes

A missing product image shows up as an empty box, a broken-image icon, or a layout that suddenly collapses. Shoppers notice it immediately. Search engines and shopping feeds notice too: Google Merchant Center requires a working image link for every product, and an image it can't fetch can get the product disapproved.

Here is why images go missing on Shopify and how to fix each cause.

Why images go missing

The file was deleted. Images uploaded to the Files page in your admin can be deleted from there. Anything that referenced that file by its URL, such as a theme section, a page, a blog post or a metafield, now points at nothing.

The image is hotlinked from somewhere else. Product descriptions are often pasted from a supplier's site, complete with <img> tags that load from the supplier's server. When the supplier changes their site, your images disappear. This is common with dropshipping and wholesale catalogues.

An app that served the image was removed. Some apps host images or inject them into your theme. Uninstall the app and those images can stop loading, while the markup that requested them stays behind.

Theme changes. A new theme may look for images in different settings, or old sections may reference files by a URL that no longer exists.

Imports. CSV imports and migrations can bring over image URLs that pointed to the old platform. Once that platform is shut down, the images go with it.

How to find missing images

Look at the storefront. Fast for one product, impossible for a whole catalogue.

Use a crawler. A crawler opens your public pages and requests each image. The free checker on this site does this for up to 50 pages from your sitemap and lists any image that returns an error, along with the pages it appears on.

Scan from the admin. Product media, descriptions and blog content are all stored in Shopify. Checking them there also covers products that are in draft or not linked from any public page, which no public crawl can see.

How to fix them

Re-upload the image to Shopify. If the original file is gone, upload it again (to the product's media, or to Files if it's used in content) and update the reference. Images stored in Shopify are served from Shopify's CDN, so they don't depend on anyone else's server.

Replace hotlinked images. For each description image that loads from another domain, download the image (if you have the rights to use it), upload it to Shopify, and swap the URL in the description. This removes the dependency for good.

Clean up after removed apps. If images vanished after uninstalling an app, check the app's documentation for leftover code, then remove or replace the blocks it left in your theme.

Remove what you don't need. Sometimes the right fix is deleting an image reference that no longer has a purpose.

Don't forget alt text

While you're fixing images, check their alt text. It describes the image for people using screen readers and helps search engines understand what the image shows. A short, accurate description of the product in the image is enough.

Where AssetGuard fits

We build AssetGuard, which scans products, collections and blog articles for missing images and broken links from inside your Shopify admin and repairs them in the content itself. To check your public pages first, run the free checker; it doesn't need an install or an email address.
