Shopify collection image not showing: where to look
You set a collection's image in the Shopify admin, but whether it shows, and where, is decided by your theme. So when a collection image is missing, check three things in order: that the image is really set on the collection, that the collection page template has a section that displays it, and that the theme's setting for showing it is turned on.
1. Is the image set on the collection?
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections and open the collection.
- Look at the image on the right. If it is empty, or you only added a picture inside the description text, the theme has no collection image to show. The description and the featured image are separate things.
- To set or replace it, hover over the image, click the horizontal menu icon, choose Change image, pick the file, click Done, then Save.
2. Does the collection template display it?
Collection pages are built from sections in the theme editor. By default a collection page has a Collection banner section and a Product grid section. The product grid shows product images, not the collection's image, so a collection image only appears where the theme has a banner or a collection list that uses it.
- In the admin, go to Online Store > Themes and click Customize on your theme.
- Use the page selector at the top to choose Collections and the collection template.
- Open the Collection banner section and look at its settings.
Setting names depend on the theme. Look for an option that shows the collection image. If the collection uses a custom template, you can see which one in the Theme template box on the collection's page in the admin.
3. Collection lists and the home page
A home page section that lists collections, or the "all collections" page, pulls each collection's own image. If those tiles are blank but the banner works, the image on the collection is probably missing or very differently sized from the others. Shopify recommends using a consistent aspect ratio for featured images so they display at the same size.
4. Test another theme
Install a fresh copy of your theme or a free theme from the Theme Store. If the image shows there, your theme's settings or code are the cause. If it is missing everywhere, go back to step 1.
When the file itself is broken
If the image is set but the file no longer loads, you will see a broken image rather than an empty space. Missing product images on Shopify covers the common causes, and the free checker will list images on your public pages that return an error.
